Emer Costello, MEP, was “caught” reading her favourite book

MEP Emer Costello“Get Caught Reading” with Ms Emer Costello, Member of the European Parliament.

“Strumpet City set in Dublin between 1907 and 1914, depicts the horrific conditions of poverty in the slums and tenements at the time and contrasts these with the lives of the wealthy classes.

Strumpet City tells the story of the struggle of the nine-month long lockout of the workers by employers which caused incredible suffering for families across the City. The book stands up as both a literary masterpiece and important social history of Dublin at the time.

The book has been chosen as Dublin City’s 2013 ‘One City One Book’  to mark the Centenary of the 1913 Lockout.  I had read it years ago, and it was certainly worth re-reading as it is an evocative and powerful read.”
