The time allocated to reading is precious. Reading is both an intellectual activity and a source of pleasure. In our society, characterized by the domination of monitors and by the accelerating pace of the exchange of information, books represent a necessary shelter, a treasure for mankind. They allow us to look back on an event, an idea or a new paradigm from a more reflective perspective. They tell us stories that take us far beyond our daily routine, that make us dream. To quote the words of the Argentinian writer Alberto Manguel, author of the astonishing “A History of Reading”: “it is the most civilised of all human passions.”

Jean-Paul Denanot, Member of the European Parliament
